Software Diagnostics Services

Friday, July 13th, 2012

For some time I was struggling with finding a good name for memory dump and software trace analysis activities. The name Memoretics I use for the science of memory dump analysis (that also incorporates software traces) seems not so good to describe the whole practical activity that should be transparent to everyone in IT. Fortunately, I timely understood that all these activities constitute the essence of software diagnostics that previously lacked any solid foundation. Thus, Software Diagnostics Institute was reborn from the previous Crash Dump Analysis Portal. This institute does pure and applied research and scientific activities and in recent years was funded mainly from OpenTask publisher and recently from Memory Dump Analysis Services. The latter company also recognized that the broadening of its commercial activities requires a new name. So, Software Diagnostics Services was reborn:

What is a Software Narrative?

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

The previous definition of software narratology was restricted to software traces and logs (the top left quadrant on a software narrative square, also the part of Memoretics which studies memory snapshots). Now, with the broadening of the domain of software narratology to the whole world of software narrative stories including actor interactions with software in construction requirements use cases and post-construction incidents we give another definition:

Software narrative is a representation of software events and changes of state. Software Narratology is a discipline that studies such software narratives (software narrative science).

2012 is The Year of Software Trace Analysis

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

The number of software trace analysis patterns approaches the critical mass of 50 and we have decided to focus on software tracing and logging in the forthcoming year. Some books on tracing including Volume 7 of Memory Dump Analysis Anthology will be published by OpenTask during that year and our efforts will be to further advance software narratology, software trace linguistics, and software trace analysis in the context of memory dump analysis, generative debugging and modeling software behavior.

What is Software Trace and Memory Dump Analysis? A One Sentence Definition

Monday, December 12th, 2011

More than 4 years passed since I provided a longer structuralist definition. Recently I came to recognize a pattern-driven iterative and incremental nature of memory and software trace analysis and post-construction software problem solving in general and therefore a one sentence definition became necessary:

“Recognition and interpretation of patterns of software behavior”

Crossdisciplinary Memoretics as Interdisciplinary Science

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Memoretics as a science of memory snapshots borrows many ideas from the following disciplines (the list is not exhaustive):

  • Troubleshooting and Debugging
  • Intelligence Analysis
  • Critical Thinking
  • Forensics
  • Linguistics
  • Archaeology
  • Psychoanalysis
  • History
  • Mathematics: Sets and Categories
  • Literary Criticism and Narratology

It also contributes many ideas back. The following diagram depicts such an interaction:

Memiosphere

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Memiosphere is the sphere of operating memory processes where memory signs (studied by memiotics) are created, manipulated and destroyed. This new word was inspired by the similar notion of semiosphere. We can also metaphorically analyze and remember it as mem(ory) + I/O + sphere.

Dictionary of Debugging: Orbifold Memory Space

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Orbifold Memory Space

A multiple virtual/physical memory space view taking into account multiple computers:

The picture can be much more complex if we glue different manifold memory spaces. The space name comes from a mathematical orbifold, a generalization of manifold.

Synonyms: cloud memory space

Antonyms:

Also: memory space, memory region, physical memory, virtual memory, manifold memory space, memory mapping.

GI Index of Memory Dump Analysis

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

GI Index (Google Insights for Search) shows that crash dump analysis and debugging slowly decline in popularity:

GI for memory dump analysis searches coincides with the birth of DumpAnalysis.org in later 2006 (the only mystery for me is mid 2005 peak):

The birth of memory dump analysis as a discipline probably reinforced the emergence of memory forensics in the early 2006:

We also see that malware analysis is on the rise and it is not a surprise that DumpAnalysis.org is moving to MARS:

Perhaps mid 2005 peak for memory dump analysis searches coincides with the interest in malware analysis.

The New School of Debugging

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

With the new year starts the new initiative to integrate traditional multidisciplinary debugging approaches and methodologies with multiplatform pattern-driven software problem solving, unified debugging patterns, best practices in memory dump analysis and software tracing, computer security, economics, and the new emerging trends I’m going to write about during this year.

Debugging in 2021: Trends for the Next Decade (Part 1)

Friday, December 17th, 2010

As the new decade is approaching (2011-2020) we would like to make a few previews and predictions:

- Increased complexity of software will bring more methods from biological, social sciences and humanities in addition to existing methods of automated debugging and computer science techniques

- Focus on first fault software problem solving (when aspect)

- Focus on pattern-driven software problem solving (how aspect)

- Fusion of debugging and malware analysis into a unified structural and behavioral pattern framework

- Visual debugging, memory and software trace visualization techniques

- Software maintenance certification

- Focus on domain-driven troubleshooting and debugging tools as a service (debugware TaaS)

- Focus on security issues related to memory dumps and software traces

- New scripting languages and programming language extensions for debugging

- The maturation of the science of memory snapshots and software traces (memoretics)

Imagining is not not limited to the above and more to come and explain in the forthcoming parts.
