2008-2012 in Retrospection

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Before deciding on whether to retrospect on 2012 we found that since March 14, 2008 this site has had more than 1 million visitors with more than 33% returning. - Dmitry Vostokov @ DumpAnalysis.org + TraceAnalysis.org -

Feel good this morning :-)

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Sometimes I do Google search for my site and find various cached dumpanalysis.org site evaluations ranging from 4,000 USD to 200,000 USD. It’s interesting to see that people evaluate how much this site worth. Today I stumbled across another unbelievable evaluation from valuemysite dot com (> 2,000,000 USD) so I checked myself:

“apple.com” is worth $340,512,336 USD
“amazon.com” is worth $340,512,336 USD
“microsoft.com” is worth $340,512,336 USD
“ibm.com” is worth $49,876,253 USD
“dumpanalysis.org” is worth $1,989,157 USD
“google.com” is worth $1,738,123 USD

Looks like some sites have an upper evaluation limit or reached an equilibrium :-)

Old Mental Dumps from June 23rd

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

2009:

Dictionary of Debugging: Hang - plan to resume DoD in July. Have lots of ideas about it.

Crash Dump Analysis Patterns (Part 85) - Ubiquitous Component pattern. Appears also in the following case study: Stack trace collection, message box, hidden exception, nested offender, insufficient memory, C++ exception, heap leak and ubiquitous component

2008:

Reflecting on 2008 (Part 1) - It is so interesting to look at what people search.

2007:

Detecting loops in code - a good exercise in disassembling

Visitors Spike

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Looks like yesterday the blog part of the portal experienced an almost threefold increase in the number of daily visits exceeding 2,400 visitors and, for the first time ever, bringing the total sliding number of unique monthly blog visits to more than 18,000:

Something happened on that day. The number of spam comments and trackbacks detected by Akismet plugin was the same as usual so spammers are ruled out.

Debugger’s Screen Resolution

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

What screen resolutions do debuggers use? Google analytics provides statistics for 2009. 1,071 different screen resolutions were used (I guess this diversity comes from multi-monitor configurations and PDA) with top 10:

Clearly old 800×600 is in minority today. There were lucky debuggers with 5120×1024 (128-bit ready for wider stack traces?) and 3840×2100 (I need more book sales for that) and even someone with screen resolution 0×0 viewed the content 12 times.

Operating Systems Scene: The View from DumpAnalysis.org

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Highly predictable picture from Google analytics of OS used to view portal and blog content:

One of the goals is to increase non-Windows OS presence over the next few years.

Internet Browsers Scene: The View from DumpAnalysis.org

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

I was curious to see what browsers are used to view portal and blog content and Google analytics provided me statistics for 2009 (there is about 9% decline in IE variants compared to 2008). 62 “different” browsers viewed content with the top 10 (I actually expected more for IE and was surprised with statistics):

Some strange browser names below perhaps point to some sort of memory corruption :-)

Memory dumps are banned in North Korea

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Hmm, I was looking at Google Analytics stats for dumpanalysis.org and here is the list of 154 visitor countries sorted by the decreasing number of visits (data for March - August, 2008):

Here is the relative graph:

Another possible reason why North Korea is not on the list could be the total absence of Internet even in government and military institutions. Also note the presence of (not set) territory on the list. I suspect these are spies and other security and forensics professionals hiding their true location.

Other countries where people don’t know about memory dumps are:

Nicaragua
Honduras
Senegal
Western Sahara
Guinea-Bissau
Mauritania
Sierra Leone
Liberia
Mali
Burkina Faso
Benin
Niger
Chad
Cameroon
Gabon
Congo - Brazzaville
Central African Republic
Zimbabwe
Mozambique
Malawi
Madagascar
Afghanistan
Turkmenistan
Tajikistan
Papua New Guinea

They are depicted in red:

I’m thinking now about Memory Dump Awareness Index (MDAI) to assign to each country :-)

Reflecting on 2008 (Part 2)

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The number of monthly site visits reached 15,000 (Google analytics reports more than 16,000). The upward trend continues since 10,000 Visit Mark at the end of January, 2008. I’m planning to add more attractive features to the portal during this summer. Stay tuned and participate more actively in SEO resonance (75% of all traffic comes from search engines) :-)

Reflecting on 2008 (Part 1)

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

In 2007 in Retrospection (Part 2) post I put the most frequent search keywords what brought people to my site. Unfortunately due my mistake I lost all cumulative data for that period and began collecting it again since March, 2008. Here is the new list of top 100 keywords out of more than 22,000 for March - June (with my links where I try to provide answers or point to other resources):

2007 in Retrospection (Part 2)

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Here is the list of 100 most frequent phrases and keywords (out of almost 30,000 unique phrases recorded for 2007) from various search engines that brought people to my blog. Therefore I believe that publishing this list will bring more people searching for the same phrases straight to my blog, some kind of “SEO resonance” :-)

2007 in Retrospection (Part 1)

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I started this blog in August, 2006 and during Christmas, 2007 moved it to dumpanalysis.org registered in March, 2006. However I didn’t track any site stats until Feb, 2007 when I added Google Analytics and ShinyStat counters. I was surprised by the growing number of visits started with 2,000/month in February and exceeding 9,000/month in November. Here is the simplified daily visits curve from ShinyStat:

I’ll put more interesting analytic observations from 2007 data later on.

Wishing all visitors a Happy Christmas and New Year.
